The Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay

Set within one of Europe’s most dramatic tidal landscapes, Mont-Saint-Michel rises from a rocky islet surrounded by a breathtaking bay. This extraordinary site reveals its unique character with the rhythm of the tides: during exceptionally high tides (coefficient above 110), the surrounding causeway is submerged, and for a few hours, the Mount becomes an island once again—reconnecting with its original maritime nature.

Straddling the border between Normandy and Brittany, Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, in recognition of their outstanding cultural and natural significance.

Today, access to the Mount is carefully organised to preserve the site. Visitors park approximately 2.5 km away, before continuing their journey via free shuttle services (“Le Passeur”), a horse-drawn carriage (“la Maringote”), or on foot via one of three pedestrian routes. The walk takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes and offers a gradual immersion into this iconic landscape as the silhouette of the Abbey slowly emerges on the horizon.
